Today is Bike to Work Day. I'm a little sad I couldn't participate. I like
bike riding. But I work so far from home, it would be impossible.

This area isn't very well built for bikes at all. It needs bike lanes or
something. I remember once I tried to bike to work when I worked in Great
Falls. (My car was getting repaired and ben borrowed a bike from friends.)

I thought I would die. There was no way to get to work without riding next
to a very scary road of death with drivers passing far too close to me to be
comfortable. I had to bounce around in the slippery gravel along the road to
avoid getting clipped by passing mirrors.

I would still like a bike for more pedestrian-friendly destinations (food
store, farmer's market, library) but I have no place to store one. The apt
complex doesn't really have any place to lock up bikes and I can't manage to
get a big bike up and down the stairs ever day. Not that there's room in the
apartment to begin with.

Would it be horrible if I added a fold-up bike to my future wedding
registry? :P

just in case you do get a fold-up bike

there are actually a bunch of bike paths in reston, even though bike lanes are severely lacking. the w&od trail is pretty convenient, kinda like a highway for bikes almost. then there are a lot of paths through the woods. if you're interested, i'm sure if you stopped by the reston association office (it's off of wiehle, kind of near mctacohut), they'd have a 'paths of reston' map or something like that. it's not so great for going places at night, because then it's scary and dark, but for daytime stuff it's not too bad.

i guess i don't know about great falls though.

but, also, fyi, the w&od goes to dc.

I used the bike trails all through reston that day without too much trouble. It was when I approached the border to great falls that the problems began....

All of the places I mentioned (library, farmer's market) have nice bike paths that take me there without death.

I didn't know w&od went to dc. Still seems far. I'll look into it though.
