Last night we had an intensely powerful, very sudden storm called a derecho. Most of the region is without power right now. We're lucky that our neighborhood is still up and running.

The storm came so quickly, it sounded like an extremely low flying plane. I was actually afraid a plane was about to crash. But it was the sound of super fast winds racing into the area. Local news says the winds peaked at 79 mph in this area. The entire house was creaking and shaking. It was pretty scary.

When I looked out the windows (with ben yelling at me to keep away from the windows), I could see trees completely bent over. Luckily none of the ones near our house snapped. The worst we had was all the stuff on the deck sliding across. Even the big heavy flower pots!

The lightening was pretty intense too. It never stopped. It wasn't flashBOOM flashBOOM. It was flashflashflashflashBOOOOOOOOOOOOM. You could see everything going on outside because the entire sky was lit up for the whole storm.

Thankfully the worst of the storm only lasted about an hour. But it did a ton of damage.

As I mentioned, our house was fine. But I walked around the neighborhood and branches were everywhere. A couple fell on cars. I stopped to talk to a neighbor who had branches crush BOTH his cars. That's some really rotten luck. Another neighbor's entire fence was flattened. Only thing left standing were the posts. And across the street from them, a tree had fallen onto someone's house. The whole neighborhood looked like a hurricane had gone through.

I had to run some errands this morning, which was a disaster because no one outside my neighborhood has power. All the street lights were out and trees blocked many roads. And of course no one knows how to drive in that sort of situation. (Treat intersections like 4-way stops, people!) In the end, none of my errands got done because the places I was going to had no power. Yeah, I should have seen that coming.

It's going to be super hot today, so I'm thankful for the working AC. If any friends in the area need it, you are welcome to cool off here. We have all the fancy things in life: electricity, ac, internet, and running water.
