This was the last volume of the His Dark Materials trilogy. I thought it was very good, overall. The first book was a bit too simplistic, in my opinion, but the other two found their footing very easily and told a good story. If you look at it stylistically, the story feels like it grows up and matures, just like the characters in the trilogy.
The ending made me CRY. I felt so stupid and embarrassed as I cried at the train station over a book. The main characters, Lyra and Will, had finally fallen in love with each other. And then they learn they have to go to their homeworlds and can never see each other ever again.
As I read that, I started to think about how I'd feel if I couldn't see ben ever again. And that's when the crying started.
In the book, they both agreed that they would sit on a specific bench at a certain time every year so they can be somewhat closer together. The bench really exists in the Oxford Botanical Gardens. I think if I should ever find myself in that part of the world, I'm going to make a point to visit it.

Date: 2010-05-07 02:53 am (UTC)The trilogy are some of my favourite books, I too cry at the end. :( I wasn't that keen on some of the storyline in the 3rd book but I really love the series as a whole... and I think I probably had really high expectations of it since I read the books as they came out and it felt like a really long wait for the 3rd! If I'd read them all in a row I probably wouldn't have felt disappointed. XD
If I ever go on a holiday to England I definitely want to go sit on the bench... and I'd probably get all teary eyed. Curse you, bittersweet ending! ;_;
