...of America
I have now learned the subject line has a limit.
I got this book because 1) It had very good reviews, and 2) It involves the collapse of civilization.
It turned out to be very difficult to read and go into very little detail about society after the collapse.
The story tended to flow between past and present far too fluidly than I could enjoy. I had to keep going back to figure out what was going on and when. It was frustrating and made reading unenjoyable.
I also did not like the heavy fantasy elements to the story. People with magic powers that could go invisible or make you forget you ever met them or see through time. I like my destruction of civilization stories to be a bit more down to earth.
And it bothered me that all the common people in the book seemed to be happier living in squalor without technology. Let's see how happy they are when their kid is malnourished or born with a disability and no one has any access to real medicine. But the book glossed over realities like that. Everything was banjos and beer.
I did like the circus though. They were delightfully creepy. (Though I suspect I imagined them a bit more sinister than the book actually describes them.)
I decided after this book I need something I know I'll like, so now I'm reading Thud!
I'm actually not a big fan of The Watch, but I still enjoy their books over a bad non-discworld book any day.
