Movie - Cloverfield
Jun. 15th, 2010 10:36 amI thought I'd hate Cloverfield because shaky camera movies are lame by nature. But it ended up being surprisingly entertaining. I wouldn't say it was good, but it was worth watching once.
I hold a special place in my heart for disaster and monster movies. I love watching buildings crumble and people flee. I may have watched one too many godzilla movies in my formative years. (I <3ed the new years day annual godzilla marathons. I miss them!)
The fleas were a nice touch. It's hard to make giant monsters really look scary on little screens. Plus you know the characters can just hide down in a bunker and avoid the disaster! But the fleas could follow people as they escaped to safety! And they had head 'splody powers. Awesome.
It did bother me though that there is definitely tons of backstory that I am missing out on. On one hand, the lack did help prevent the story from getting bogged down by dialogue. On the other hand, now I want to know what happened to cause all this! I have tried looking up info, but it looks like very little of the viral backstory stuff has survived. There's a manga with some backstory though. I'll have to see if I can find that somewhere.
Also, there was a special investigative mode of the dvd which had lots of background info, but we didn't discover it until AFTER the movie. And I was not prepared to watch in twice in one night. Pooo.
