Owning a house is destroying me.

On Tuesday we bought the house. Wednesday was spent cleaning because the former owners were disgusting. I don't believe they ever cleaned it in the 10 years they lived there. Have you ever seen 10 years of dust accumulating behind a door? I have. It's disgusting.

Also, we could not figure out how to turn the water back on. It got so bad I even called the water company to confirm it wasn't off on their end.

Wednesday night, my parents arrived to help us fix up and paint the place. They brought many many tools. We told them how there was no water and the first thing they asked was whether we opened the valve by the street. Why is there a water valve by the street!? So yeah, no, we didn't turn that valve. Once dad went out to turn it on, the water gushed through the pipes! Yay water!

Unfortunately, that's when we learned the water heater had died.

So on Thursday, dad installed a new water heater for us. It took him most of the day, but he also managed to find time to repair all the holes in the ceilings.

That was also the day that we found pictures in the closet of the previous owners having sex. Protip: If you are the type to take pictures of yourselves during sex, store the pictures really carefully so that they are not left behind should you ever move.

Friday, we spackled. Because there were about a million holes in the walls. The previous homeowners were animals.

While we worked on that, my mom started to clean the bathrooms. There, she discovered that the previous homeowners had written their names on the bathroom tiles with permanent marker. I repeat: The previous homeowners were animals. As of today, mom has the writing down to one word.

Saturday we painted. The grime on the walls was so old, it was permanently embedded into the old paint. Also, everything was painted a nasty off white color that just makes everything look old and dirty. AND the children of the former homeowners drew all over the walls. In multiple rooms. My parents would have beat me for that. But looking at what the parents left in the bathroom on the walls, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

We managed to get a first coat of primer on the living room, dining room, downstairs hallway, upstairs hallway, and blue upstairs bedroom. There's still the kitchen, both bedrooms downstairs, both bathrooms, and the pink bedroom upstairs. And all the closets and doors. And then we can start a second coat of primer. AND THEN we can put regular paint on the walls if we so choose.

So yeah, I kinda hate homeownership. It's too much work! We're going to be doing repairs on this house for years. I am not ok with that. I have a life. I cannot spend every weekend repairing a house!

At least once the major repairs are done, we can start moving in. Anyone want to help us move? :P

Ben and I should be able to carry the boxes just fine, but we don't know how we're going to get the heavy stuff like the couches out of the place. Worse comes to worse, we'll hire movers I guess.

My parents leave tomorrow. I'm glad for all their help but I think 3 days is my limit with them. Yesterday my mother was making me crazy. I'd say, "The sky is blue." and she'd argue, "NO! The sky is BLUE!" And then I'd flip out because I had just said that. I've been on my best behavior but I'm ready to push them out the doors.
