Jul. 17th, 2005 08:15 pmToday Ben and I went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. It wasn't fantastic, but it wasn't bad either. It was certainly better than Planet of the Apes. It was enjoyable enough. I'm glad I got it for matinee prices though. :P
I couldn't put my finger on what really bothered me about it until I was in the bathtub this evening. In the old version, Willy Wonka was a man that never forgot what it was like to be a kid. It makes him sort of special. In this new one, Willy Wonka is a man that seems to be trying to regain the childhood he never had. That makes him seem sad and pathetic. Rather than being the great magician, like the old movie, he is this creepy creepy guy. Ben compared him to Michael Jackson. I think that is a good comparison.
There were some other things I disliked, but they were minor. I certainly didn't mind seeing it, but it probably won't ever be considered a classic or anything.
I'd like to read the book one day and see what both versions of the movie followed, and where they deviated. Ben says that the book is very thin, so I could probably read it at the library without even checking it out. That's good, because I can't get a library card until I get some mail sent to me here.

Date: 2005-07-18 02:25 pm (UTC)I loved Charlie... It's possible that it was only because I love Johnny Depp, but Jason and Andrew loved it too. I dunno, I really enjoyed it and plan on seeing it many more times before the summer is over. In fact, I'm taking my sister and Jason's cousins to see it again on Tuesday. Hahaha. ;x
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was the first chapter book I ever read on my own. I loved that book as a child. Oddly enough, I haven't read it since the 6th grade. I should really get myself a copy again, as I've lost the old one (and the way things are done now, they'll probably have re-released it with Johnny Depp's face on the cover-which would only be more motivation for me to buy it).

Date: 2005-07-18 04:07 pm (UTC)Actually, I need official letters with my address on it, like bills. :P I don't pay for anything right now though. But the bank should start sending me statements soon, so I can use that.
You should save some of that chocolate money and go see howl's moving castle. Far better.
