I'm making a mini-scythe for my halloween costume. Something small enough to carry on the train, but big enough that it looks something like a scythe.

I've done some research and found a few ways I can go about making it. But now I can't decide what would be the best way!

I figure I can use some sort of foam board or something for the blade and paper mache it smooth. Is that the right thing to do?

As for the staff, using a pipe seems to be the lightest, but I worry that the pipe would be too big around. Plus, do I paper mache the whole thing? Cause plastic is not going to take paint all that well and pipes tend to be very white. The other best option seems to be using a wooden dowel. They come in all sorts of sizes. But how do I attach the blade? Will tape and paper mache do it or should I screw it on?

As you can see, I am pathetic and clueless. So crafty/costume/cosplay people, how would YOU go about making a mini-scythe?

There is specific spray paint for plastic - we've used it for the PVC chairs outside.

Does it give off a strong smell? I'm having images of toxic fumes on the train and dirty looks from people around me.

PVC comes in different diameters and is stronger and lighter than wood. I think you can probably also get it cut to the length you'd like at Lowe's or a hardware store. I'm not sure what is meant by foam board, but if it's what I'm imagining (~half a centimeter thick with foam wedged between posterboard like material) then I think a great idea might be to make two scythe shapes and glue them on either side of the PVC/rod. Then you would glue them together at the point. Then using papier mache you could cover the gaps and paint. Then you're scythe blade would have a bit more dimension.

Also, regarding the smelly glue, if you make it far enough in advance and don't keep it locked in a closet, the fumes should be well gone by Halloween.

I didn't know it came in different diameters. If the store near me has those smaller versions then that might be the best option. I will have to check.

Paperclay is apparently much better for prop style things than paper mache... it's similarly lightweight but can be sanded down to create a smooth surface, which I don't think you can do with paper mache. And so long as you do it in advance and leave it somwhere where it can air you stuff shouldn't be stinky at all. I've never had anything which I've painted, spraypainted, glued, etc in a well venitlated place hold on to an odor enough that it's smellable unless maybe you scratch the surface and stick your nose right up against it or something. XD

I will look for that! I want the blade to look nice and smooth!
