Last night I finally broke the news to my parents that I didn't want a
church wedding. My mom sounded extremely disappointed, but she didn't yell.
She has been surprisingly mellow ever since my grandparents died.
We discussed wedding stuff and agreed that I need to plan a NY trip this
summer to check out locations. She mentioned a couple places that her
clients own and a place a family friend owns, all of whom I could get
discounts from. And my grandpa's friend has offered to help with planning at
a discount. (She is a wedding planner.) And almost all of my mom's clients
want to do my invitations and whatnot at cost for me.
I'm feeling a lot better about my budget now.
We did have one little disagreement though. Over tradition. My mom wants me
to do all sorts of silly traditional things. I have tried to explain to her
that my SPACE! wedding represents the future, not the past, and tradition is
all about the past.
She was talking about all the ceremonies I had to have because it's
tradition but I think I'm doing a good job pointing out how silly
traditions can be. For example, the garter belt ceremony.
Me: Mom, do you really want to see you son-in-law reaching his hands up your
daughter's dress?
Mom: *pause* You could wear it on your ankle...
Me: His hands up my dress in front of our whole family!
Mom: ...You could wear it on your wrist!
Me: I don't want the garter belt ceremony.
Mom: *Changes the subject*
I win! But who came up with that garter belt ceremony anyway? It seems
pretty dumb to me. And embarrassing!
