As the subtitle suggests, this book was SAD. All caps there. It was so sad, I was crying at the end. In public. All the people around me giving me concerned looks as I bawled through the last chapters.
While the whole book was just one sad thing after another, it was the last handful of chapters that really killed me.
First of all, some background info is needed. This is vol 4 after all. (Please forgive me for oversimplifying things, but if I did otherwise, it would take all day.)
- Bao Yu is the main character. He was once a magic piece of jade in heaven that got reincarnated into a person. He was born with a piece of jade in his mouth that protects him from evil.
- Dai Yu is one of the main love interests. She was once the magic flower in heaven that got reincarnated into a person. Bao yu as the magic jade cared for her as the flower while they were up in heaven.
- Bao Chai is a regular girl and the other main love interest. When she was born, a monk gave her a piece of gold and told her that she would live a happy life if she found the jade that matched it.
Ok, so Bao Yu and Dai Yu were madly in love. If one got mad, the other would become ill. They lived for each other. Bao Yu was fond of Bao Chai as a friend. They liked to see each other, but no passion was anywhere to be found.
Then at some point Bao Yu lost his lucky jade. And his mind. Cause it was magic. It makes sense, really.
His family decides the solution is to marry him off to Bao Chai, because she has that lucky piece of gold. Their thoughts are that the gold will bring the jade back.
But they knew that Bao Yu was in love with Dai Yu. So they LIED TO HIM and told him he was marrying her. And magically, he started to get better. (You'd think his family would realize they should really marry him to Dai Yu, right?)
At the same time, Dai Yu finds out Bao Yu has been engaged to Bao Chai. She is so overcome by grief that she becomes ill. Nothing can cure her.
So now it's the day of the wedding. Dai Yu is dying in her bed. Bao Yu is all yippy skippy excited to marry the love of his life. Bao Chai has been dressed up in her wedding dress and veil. Her family makes her borrow one of Dai Yu's maids. With the maid and the veil cowering her face, you can't tell she's Bao Chai.
Dai Yu can faintly hear the sound of the ceremony from her bed. Just as Bao Yu and Bao Chai are officially married, Dai Yu dies from heartbreak! :(
Then, Bao Yu pulls back the veil to see his wonderful bride....and it's Bao Chai!
He's convinced this is all a dream or a horrible trick and refuses so consummate the marriage. He demands to know where Dai Yu is, and after much persistence finally learns she's dead. He's heartbroken now and goes into a deep depression. :(
I'm going to start vol 5 tonight. I need to find out what happens! I hope Bao Yu and Dai Yu can be reunited in heaven or something!
