Jan. 7th, 2009 10:21 amSo the Key, 14th Street, Memorial, and Roosevelt Bridges are going to be closed to the public (unless you are walking)on Inauguration Day. That leaves one major bridge, the Chain Bridge to handle ALL the traffic coming from VA that day. That means the only real way into DC would be the metro.
Metro has been practicing for the crazy crowds all this week. On Monday, my bus broke down and they had no spare drivers to send a replacement bus. On Tuesday, the train conductors kept pulling too far up in the station, so people couldn't get into the front car. This morning, there were major delays that resulted in very tight quarters. I was so squished, I didn't realize I was standing on someone until she pointed it out to me.
At this point I'd say take a boat, but they've decided to ban all boats for security reasons.
At least for those who make it into the city and survive the cold weather, heavy crowds, and scarce potties, the bars will be open late. Though I don't expect bars and restaurants to have much to sell because trucks won't be able to get into the city that weekend. And even if they get a big delivery right before, what are the chances it won't run out with the massive crowds predicted?
I did really want to go, but at this point I'm completely for the watch-tv-in-my-pjs plan. I'm glad I have that day off from work.
