This man amuses me way too much.
Jun. 2nd, 2002 11:14 amMr. Gaiman,
I absolutely adored A Walking Tour of the Shambles. Since reading it though, I have become extremely frustrated -- in the front it lists that you have also written several other books in the Little Walks series but I can't find them anywhere. As a matter of fact, I can't even seem to find any references to them! Do they truly exist? If so, is there someplace I can find them? Thanks!
I haven't written any of the books listed in the front of Walking Tour, not even "Several Interesting Bus Journeys" or the illustrated cucumber guide. Gene Wolfe didn't write any of the books he lists at the front of the Walking Tour either, not even "I was a Werewolf for the CIA".
I confess that I am having some difficulty coming to grips with Neil "Scary Pants" Gaiman, Horticulturist. While getting your thumbs green is a worthy pastime, picturing you out on your knees in leather jacket and sunglasses giving a morning glory its quietus with a spade makes me chuckle just a bit. Do you find that people in general have problems distancing the art from the artist? In your case in particular?
Well, there's the art, and there's the artist, and then there's the ideas people have about the artist. Confusing any of them is a bad idea, unless you're someone like Madonna, in which case confusing them seems to be the entire point.
On a day to day basis I don't give a lot of thought to the me in other people's heads -- whenever I hear stories about "Neil Gaiman" they are always so strange and unlikely (and, in the main, untrue), and they bear so little resemblance to the me that potters about the garden that I've long since resigned myself to the idea that there is a smooth pale bloke in dark glasses and a leather jacket walking the earth late at night being cool, and then there's me at (mostly) home, who writes stories, and reads bedtime stories to Maddy, and wonders about ways to scare off the asparagus beetles, and copes with deadlines or doesn't.
I've always assumed that he has a lot more fun than I do. But I probably take more joy in things than he ever could.
*giggle* "It says here you grow exotic pumpkins. What kind of pumkins do you grow?" "Exotic ones."
