That was all rather exciting.

A little after 4, I believe, we lost power. It was a slow loss. First everything dimmed and slowed down. I figured a brown-out and shut off all nonessential electronics. Then it was gone. All of it.

We tend to lose power a lot in this area, so it was at first no big deal. But it never came back on. Daddy called, telling us power was out in most of the northeast. Oh, and that the locks on the door at work were electric, so it might take him a while to come home.

In the mean time, we could hear the drivers screaching and yelling and honking down on mainstreet. Despite that, I was rather entertained.

So what was the number? 50 MILLION people lost power? I can now say I was one of them. Hmmm, I bet they're already selling the t-shirts in nyc. "I survived the blackout of 2003!" :P

Anyway, nothing was really all that different until the sun started going down. We ate an early dinner (Yay propane tank!) so we wouldn't ahve to eat in the dark. We sat outside for a while after that, with a radio, just listening to what was going on. When it started to get real dark, everyoe wenr off to do their own things, by candlelight.

There was something all-together too entertaining about writing letters by candlelight.

I had a thought. All the homes in our area must ahve smelled wonderful last night. No one really owns emergency candles anymore. They're all SCENTED! I know each room in our house had a different scent. Even after we blew them out, we knew exactly which room we were wandering into just by smell.

Then we went out to look at the stars. With no streetlights, it was beautiful! There were so many stars!!!! I saw shooting stars! :)

We were looking for mars, but never found it. Well, I thought I found it, but daddy kept insisting that I was wrong. It looked pretty mars-like to me. And he didn't find mars, which could easily have proved me wrong.

And you know, with no lights on, one gets tired a lot quicker. I went to bed before midnight! I was exhausted! I guess that's why people used to go to bed so early. It's not like there's much to do after dark anyway. I wrote letters and crocheted.

Despite my uninteresting activities, I really found the entire thing very exciting.

My dog, on the otherhand, was terrified. You see, she's afraid of the dark. And there was quite a bit of dark out there last night. I'm telling you, she was under my feet all night. If I went downstairs, I had to leave a candle on for her, or carry her with me. She was crying so much!

My poor puppy. She had no idea what was going on.

Everyone around here was pretty relaxed. There was the sense that no one could do anything about the situation, so let's make the best of it. :P
