Help! Someone who is smart with computers!

My comp keeps shutting itself off. It gets waaaaay too hot and just turns off. I am pretty positive that's a BAD thing.

The question is, can it be fixed? What do I ahve to do?

[EDIT: I ahve no clue where the fan is or what it looks like. I am an idiot. Also, the little box with all the wires coming out is the REALLY hot part. It burns my skin, it's so hot. That's probably a bad thing, right?]

[EDIT: Found the fan. But now my comp is humming. GRRR! I don't know what I'm doing wrong! somebody help me!]

If it's a desktop and you leave it on 24/7... well, I'd start with turning it off when you go to bed at night ;-)

Yes, that's what I'm going to start doing. Turning it off at night and while I'm at work and classes. But that's just a temporary solution. *worries* I don't want my comp to die!!!

aaaack careful. is your cpu fan still spinning? if not then your gonna overheat. overheating can cause long term damage so its a good idea not to let this happen. if its a case fan not running then open the case and you could put a fan blowing on the case itself.

Ok, so to check this, I need my computer running while I take the case off, right? It won't electricute me or anything, will it?

If the fan isn't working, could I get a new fan?

And will the fan be really obviously visable?

This is all so confusing....

if you want to check if the fan's still running i'd suggest taking the case off *before* you turn on the computer again. taking off the case normally involves turning the computer on its side or something, at least in my experience.

if the problem is with your fan, which it sounds like it is, the part can be replaced. you might want to take it to somewhere that specializes in repairs though... i'd be a little reluctant to do it myself, and i've mucked with insides of computers before. (only a little, but still. yeah. best to leave the mucking to the professionals.)

Ah! Thank you for telling me to turn it off first, and then check.

And thank you for letting me know this is a fixable thing! I was starting to panic!

How do you know it is overheating? Are you getting data corruption? I can come look at it some time if you IM me.

Go ahead and check the fan. Watch out for static (i.e., touch the metal frame frequently) and don't touch any of the circuitry and you'll be fine. But don't let the internal cables touch the blades while it's spinning, they are usually really flimsy, and I've destroyed fans that way.

I think it is overheating cause I touched the back of the case and it burned me.

Thanks for the tips! I shall go check the fan now! :)

1. I have no clue what a fan loosk like or where it is.

2. The part that is getting really hot is the little box with lots of colored wires coming out of it. That's bad, right?

Crap. Sounds like the fan in your power supply (aka PS, aka heavy wirey box) is broken. You need a new PS.

... say, didn't you need a new PS last year?

I thought last year it was just that my computer was too close to the wall or something...

By any chance will you be on campus this week to possibly look at it? I can give you cookies!

How expensive are new wirey boxes?
