Hi! Updating! Yes! Finally!

So, Saturday I got up WAY TOO EARLY for otakon. I needed to gt up at 5:30 to make sure I was showered and dressed in costume and ready to go to the con. I had wig issues and ended up running late, but somehow got to cassandra's house early. I like to think that my car bends the time stream sometimes.

So we got to the con just about the time it was opening. It was in a big overwhelming convention center with so many people and stairs that never take you to the place you think you are going. I was looking for laura, who said she'd be at the amv thing. She wasn't, but cassandra was. (We had split up after getting badges.)

I wanted to go to a sailor moon panel but since I didn't have a watch, I stayed for the entire amv thing. There was yuri romance video! And it was the only good romance one too! (Note: Writer very biased against romantic amvs.) Out of the funny ones, only 2 really made me laugh. Isn't that sad?

I think we went to jojo's bizarre adventure for laura. Or maybe the dealer's room. Anyway, we did stuff. And looked around. I think there was artist alley and the art show involved too. Many pretty shiny things.

We wanted to see SARS Wars, but there was a huge line and it was crazy. We were in the dealer's room when we finally found laura. I tried to get everyone to see yakitate japan, but that was full too. Curses. I would think that if you have a set attendance limit preplanned, you can at least make sure there's enough seating for everything. Especially if it's something popular.

Although it was cool to see laura, I was dead tired. I REALLY needed to go home and rest. Plus I was bored because I couldn't get in to see anything good. So cassandra and I went home and ate yakisoba (So good!) and I got to get lots of much needed sleep.

The next day was much more relaxed because I had accepted by then that there was nothing I wanted to do that day. I ended up spending lots of money and getting free parking and buying a slurpee and it was a good day. Except we wanted laura to come and have slurpees with us. Weird transportation issues killed that. Laura will just have to visit me one day, instead of staying in maryland oh so far away.

I would like to point out that my car got there and back to baltimore both days on a total of half a tank of gas. That pleases me.

After the con, Ben's mom arrived and we ran off to Washington DC to the museum of natural history for the afternoon/evening. Very big museum. We only managed about half of it. Ben and I will have to go back to finish.

For dinner, we tried a steak place but it was too expensive so we walked out. Went to a family restaurant instead. Then home and sleep. The next day was work. When I came home, the apartment was empty! I was so sad!

Ben had gone with his mom to the mall. They came back pretty soon though. For dinner, we met with ben's cousin at an italian restaurant. We were there for like, three hours. Had it not been for the friendly red crayon I had been supplied and the paper table cloth, I may have gone mad. Instead, I drew an over exuberant sun killing people on the pavement with it's friendly deadly rays of light.

Ben's mom seemed to really like my dog. I hope the dog is still there when I get home. I'd be sad if ben's mom put her in her suitcase or something.

And now, I should get back to work. But I am updated! Yay!

That's one of the big problems that always occurs at conventions, and it's basically made up of two parts, both of which can be very confusing and frustrating for staff-- The first thing is that they don't know how many people are interested in specific events. Just like people used to say "Oh, a panel by an American webcomic artist? Nobody'll care about that, I mean who's ever heard of Megatokyo anyway?", this con probably had some "An anime about baking? Give the bigger video room to Madlax." or something. But the other part is that they already have the rooms set out, and each room can only hold so many people. No matter how many popular things they may be running at once, they can't just get more big rooms added on for the convention, they have to put things in all of the small conference rooms, too. So they try to estimate what will be less popular (at ACen, I think the smaller video rooms end up with older anime a lot, like Cardcaptor Sakura or Lupin or what have you, and newer stuff with good reviews, like say Haibane Renmei will get put in the large video rooms. Oh god, I haven't been to a con since 2004 *weep*) and stick those into the smaller video rooms because there has to be something in those video rooms.

It's frustrating, because I've definitely had experiences where I'll, say, go to one panel and it's only got about a dozen people there, and another panel I want to go to is standing room only with people flodding out the back door. But sometimes, the staff just can't halp it-- hotels only have so many large rooms and they have to predict priorities before the con so everything is organized. : /

*sigh* I miss going to anime cons : ( Somehow Wizardworld, while fun, just isn't the same.

I was surprised about Yakitate because it is very popular and also very new and has been receiving fantastic reviews. I knew it that before I started watching it. (That was sorta a reason I didn't bother to try it for so long. What a snob I am. :P) They should have realized that and put it in a bigger room.

And it wasn't a hotel con. This was an actual convention center. It seemed to me that they had a lot more room, but that's just my guess. Perhaps those big halls were being used to store stuff or something. But I felt like there was some poor decisions made on where things were going to happen, and how many people they expected for events.

Ahhh. I know Aven has started using the convention center for some things, like the dealer's room, and Wizardworld (which is a huuuuge con)also uses the same convention center.... but neither of them uses the whole thing. They probably have different "packages" and whatnot, and don't want to reserve the whole place all at once in case somebody else wants part of the convention center. I don't know, Otakon is a really really huge con... but a lot of times there would be other conferences going on at the same hotel/convention center as ACen.... bunches of dudes in suits wandering around looking totally baffled. XD

Man, I kind of wish I'd gone to Otakon : 3 It's so expensive to go to out-of-town conventions though, unless you know people who are roadtripping...

You could have stayed at my place! :) It would have been free and I was driving back and forth each day!

I'd still have had to buy a ticket to fly out there, though.... and I still need to pay my dad back for the other tickets to visit New York, so it's not really feasible ~~

I'm trying to save money, really honest! *goes and buys more Pinkys* ; )
