Well, I finally got all my pictures from the zoo uploaded. My god it took forever! But now I can share my fabulous zoo adventure! Yay!
It started bright and early in the morning. I wanted to get to the zoo by 11am because I had tickets to see the baby panda. Last time I had tickets it snowed and the zoo was closed. I was determined to NOT miss the panda this time. I had a panda hat and a Darwin shirt and by god I was either going to see that panda or kill someone trying.
So yeah, I couldn't find parking and the train was late. So I missed my panda ticket time. :(
Luckily though, the baby panda was outside and they were letting anyone go over to see him! YAY!!!

This is the baby panda's dad. He's very big and likes bamboo. He was sitting really close to the viewing area so I was able to get a really good picture.

The baby panda was up in a tree. Before this guy, I didn't even know pandas could climb trees. But this guy LOVES trees. It's very cute.
I was very pleased that I got to see the pandas. Ben then took me to the gift shop to buy me a super soft panda plushie, and a panda sippy mug. They also had tarepanda alarm clocks! I wanted one, but I couldn't think of another reason I'd need an alarm clock. I wish they were selling other tarepanda stuff.
After a short lunch, we went to the elephant house.

The elephant wasn't really in the mood for pictures...

But the hippo was having a great time, playing with his big red ball.

He tried to throw it to me! (Or eat me.) Luckily he dropped it. I wouldn't want to touch a ball that had been in a hippo's mouth.
We next found ourselves at the small mammal house. Most of the pictures here were taken by ben because he is the rodent king! They'd see him and come running out of their little holes to pose for him. It was cute and creepy at the same time.

This zoo was overrun my golden lion tamarin monkeys. I felt like half the displays were just these monkeys.

There were lots of small rodents in the small mammal house. All of them loved ben.

When ben walked over to this shrew's display, it crawled out from its little hidey-hole and walked straight up to ben. Then stood there and let ben take a billion pictures of the little guy. Too bad the flash and reflection messed them up. This is the cutest shrew I've ever seen!

I also got to see the otters eating fish. It was cute because they all seemed afraid to go in the water. Silly otters, you can swim!
After that we went to the lizard house, but I didn't have time to take pictures. Ben was sad and hot in there. Our visit to the primate house was short as well, thanks to a vomiting orangutan. Then we ended up in what we thought was an exhibit on animal intelligence. Instead we got to see monkeys with large red butts mating. Eww.
While fleeing from that scene, we caught the sea lion feeding! Yay!

The sea lion was very excited when the lady came out to feed her.

She had to do tricks to earn her meal though. She had to jump up on some rocks, bring the lady a boogie board, and clean the bottom of the tank a little. (She brought up a stick and a leaf!)
From there we went to the Amazon house. It was hot and made ben sad. I liked it though. I like to pretend I'm actually walking through a rainforest.

These fish might not look big in the picture, but the smallest ones were as big as I am. These were HUGE fish! They were scary! Do they actually get that big in the wild?
The day ended with cute little prairie dogs. Their tails were wagging and everything. I wanted to stick one in my pocket and take it home!

Date: 2006-03-31 02:56 am (UTC)Also, if you ever go to Dallas you have to go to the Dallas World Aquarium. It's a rainforest set up in a large greenhouse like building (like 10 or 12 stories). It's beautiful. You start in the canopy and move all the way to 'under the river'. A lot of the birds and small mammals run free in it. I think you would really like it.

Date: 2006-03-31 02:37 pm (UTC)Ben took most of the rodent pictures. Would you believe he used his camera phone? They came out really nice! (Especially considering the glass in the way.)
I'm really happy how the pictures came out. It was a good day for it! :)
