I just applied for a job in San Francisco. Because I'm insane.

Actually, the job is a huge long-shot. I really don't think I'll get it. But it seemed like something I'd enjoy doing and ben has encouraged me to apply out of town if it's something I would enjoy. So, um, yeah.
Part 1 and Part 2

San Jose
We spent the next day with Ben's sister. The first stop, I believe, was the ebay/paypal building where she worked. (Yes, the same one that had that explosion about a week ago.)
Ebay )

Then she took us to an electronics store called Fry's. This chain decorates each of their stores with a different theme. The San Jose theme was an Aztec pyramid.
Fry's Electronics )

After that we had lunch in San Jose's Japantown before making our way to the Tech Museum. I had SO much fun at the Tech Museum. It was one of those hands-on science museums. I got to build a roller coaster, make glow in the dark bacteria, walk around in drunk glasses, and all sorts of cool stuff like that! Definitely one of the best parts of the trip.
Tech Museum )

I really wish I had has more time at the Tech Museum. I felt kinda rushed to get through everything and skipped some of the things I wanted to do because I couldn't afford to waste time waiting. Oh well, guess it's an excuse to come back one day.

Chinatown
The next day Ben's sister had a class so she dropped us off in San Francisco to entertain ourselves. We first stopped at the sony store to look at various playstation games. Then we walked down to Chinatown.
Chinatown Gate )

Turns out that Chinatown was have an Autumn Moon festival that day so it was REALLY crowded. It was stressing me out. There was barely room to breathe. Needless to say we didn't get to see much.

After a short amount of time we wanted to get out of there. We quickly taught ourselves how to use the bus system and met Ben's sister down by her class.

The next day we were on our way home. The trip went far too fast! I really liked California. The people there were so much nicer than they are here, and everything was so pretty.
Continued from here.

Golden Gate Bridge
So the next morning we were up bright and early (Still not used to the time difference) to head out to Muir Woods. We got to drive over the Golden Gate Bridge! Ben took some pretty nifty pictures while I drove.
It's sorta reddish orange )

Muir Woods
Muir Woods wasn't too far after that, but it was STRAIGHT UP. So scary! We had to take this tiny wiggly road up into the mountains because it was too steep to make a straight road. I thought I was going to die. Seriously. I've never been so scared before in my entire life. I could see off the side of the mountain and I was not happy about it.

I was a shaking nervous wreck by the time we got to the parking lot. I nearly threw up. :P But the park was pretty and we had fun there. I was able to distract myself from the evil wiggly road for a good couple of hours.

Muir Woods is an old-growth redwoods forest. That means most of the trees are as old as 500-800 years old, with some of them being over 1,000 years old! As you can imagine, these are some BIG trees.
Into the woods )

We took a different road back down the mountain which was thankfully slightly less wiggly. After cleaning up a little, we drove out to Davis to meet with Kelly, a friend of mine from college. We got a little lost, but Kelly was able to guide us via cell phone.
Me and Kelly! )

We went out to eat and learned that Kelly is one the the leading experts on furries. Then we went back to her place and talked until it was late and I had to drive home.

Fisherman's Wharf
The next morning with very sore feet we made our way to Fisherman's Wharf. We took the famous San Francisco streetcars, an interesting experience. No one told me that these things frequently lose their grip on the track and roll BACKWARDS down the hills. Yeah.... not so cool.

But we survived the streetcars and made it to the Wharf where a creepy man promptly jumped out at me. It was kinda scary. Later in the day we found a crowd around the guy watching him scare others.

We first stopped at the Ghirardelli Square for some free chocolate. Mmmm, tasty! Then we headed over to the water to be tourists.
The sights of Fisherman's Wharf )

Then we started walking towards the Aquarium of the Bay. But first I had to stop at Pier 39!
Sea lions! )

So we eventually made it to the Aquarium which was short but pretty cool. They have two giant tanks, one to show the shallow areas of the bay and one for the deep areas of the bay. You walk through a long tube that goes right through the tanks! All the fish swim around you!

There were also divers in the tanks that could answer questions. I didn't know it was possible to talk while diving. So that was pretty cool too! Divers and sharks and schools of fish!

After the fish tanks, they take you upstairs to a touch tank room.I got to touch starfish, stingrays, and sharks. Unfortunately I upset the shark I touched because it later attacked Ben when he was touching the other shark. H was ok, it only bumped him, but it was still kinda scary.

The Aquarium was good but short. It didn't take long to go through at all. We ate some lunch and then went to find other forms of entertainment. This was found in the form of a bread bakery tour. That was really interesting and surprisingly fun. We even got to try some of the breads! :)

Then we wandered around a bit more until we discovered a coin-op museum. Admission was free and you only paid to see the exhibits in action.
Fear Laughing Sal! )

We made a quick escape from the evil that was Laughing Sal and drove back to the airport to return the rental car. Ben's sister picked us up and drove us to her place. We stayed with her for the rest of the vacation.
I've been meaning to type this up, but I kept putting off uploading pictures. ^^; So now about a month and a half later, I present to you our vacation!

Shaky Start
On the first day of our trip we learned a very important lesson. Double check when your flight is taking off because your tickets may not always be correct. ^^; We missed our connecting flight in Phoenix because we very carefully followed our tickets which said boarding was at 10. IN FACT, the plane was leaving at 10. If we had checked the gate, we would have discovered the mistake on our tickets.

Thankfully I didn't panic or anything embarrassing like that. We calmly went to the customer service desk and explained what happened and the very nice lady there booked us on the next flight out, which was in only a few hours. Crisis averted!

I had a mild moment of panic when we got to the San Jose airport because out luggage had not come on the same flight as us. However, after checking the luggage office we quickly found our bags. So it was all good. From there it was a short shuttle ride to the rental place. I had called ahead so my car was ready to go. All I had to do was sign the paperwork.

Driving to Fresno
In the tiniest car known to man we began our drive to Fresno. We got a little lost at the beginning trying to navigate San Jose, but soon we were on the highway. Our directions took us through the mountains. It was very very pretty. Probably the prettiest driving part of the week.
Scenic Highway )

Fresno
We made good time to Fresno and was at our hotel before dark. I've been told that we stayed in the nicest hotel in Fresno. It was pretty spiffy. The beds were amazingly soft and huge and wonderful. I had plans to relax in the hot tub, but the bed devoured my strength. I slept VERY well that night.

In the morning, we checked out and drove to Clovis, which is a tiny tiny town just outside Fresno. We got there far too early and nothing was open so we just wandered around for an hour or so until the cinnamon bun place opened. We had some very tasty and filling buns for breakfast. It pleased me.

By then the used book stores were open so we killed some time there. In the first one, Ben found a copy of howl's moving castle for me. It was a very good find! The second book store was not as impressive. We didn't find anything worthwhile there.

After the book stores, we went to the jewelers who were finally open. We looked at what the jeweler had and ben told me to pick out whatever I wanted. I picked a very pretty tear drop shaped benitoite gem set in white gold. Ben looked relieved that I didn't pick the $3,000 necklace that was also in the case. Then we talked with the jeweler for a bit about the benitoite mine and how the people who bought it can't sell anything they find commercially for 10 years and how they found a HUGE chunk of benitoite just sitting on the ground in the mine and how they were trying to open the mine up as a "dig your own gems" thing.

Once we were out of the store Ben asked be if I would marry him and of course I said yes. ^^; (And for all you people who claimed I never announced it, I DID make a voice post right afterwards. It's your own fault for not listening to it. :P)

So then we said goodbye to Fresno (which wasn't that impressive to look at anyway) and started our drive towards San Francisco. This highway was not nearly as pretty as the one to Fresno, but there were windmills. The windmills made ben VERY happy.
Windmills! )

Emperor Norton's Grave
We made a short stop just outside San Francisco to pay our respects to Joshua Norton, the United State's first and only Emperor. The cemetery must get a lot of visitors for the Emperor because they have a map printed out that gives directions directly to his grave. If you ever visit, just stop in at the front desk. They'll know what you're talking about.
Emperor Norton )

After that, we tried to find our hotel. I missed my turn though and ended up driving THROUGH San Francisco. That wasn't fun at all. I was a nervous wreck by the time we got to the hotel. That was not an experience I would ever want to repeat.

The San Francisco hotel was not as swanky as the Fresno hotel, but it was near plenty of restaurants and shops. Ben took me out to an all-you-can-eat chinese buffet where I ate too many sweet buns. Then we did some shopping and went to bed. We were going to Muir Woods the next day so we needed lots of rest!
Soon I head out to the airport for a fantastic week in california! Hope I didn't forget anything!

Fridays take so long! Gah! I'm going to go insane! And to make it worse, it's a holiday weekend. I don't want to be here!!!

My goals for the weekend are to sleep, watch bad anime, and sew cute outfits for my california trip. (Eeee! Excited!) Oh, and plan an oil change. My car's oil light thingie went on, so I really can't put that off anymore. Bah. The manual says I've got 600 miles before bad things happen. So I've at least got a good amount of time to schedule this. If I need to, I can even schedule it after my trip.

And I need to find time and a place to get my car inspected. Some place that won't unplug my breaklights and then offer to plug them back in for me for a hefty fee. This may be an after california thing too. Ben has me pretty busy up until then. We'll have to see.
Hotel rooms have been reserved!

While in Fresno, we're staying at the Four Points Hotel. It has a hot tub! Then in San Francisco, we're staying at the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway. It doesn't have anything fancy, but it seems like the best deal for the location.

I spent hours reading hotel reviews! There was this one hotel I considered that had free cheese and wine every afternoon, but it had a lot of negative reviews on the location and the staff. And there was this other hotel in Japantown with east/west rooms, but there were lots of complaints on staff and parking and stuff like that.

Hopefully I chose well. I tried to pick hotels that had a lot of positive reviews and few negative ones. Altogether, we will be spending about $300 total including taxes, which I think is pretty good.

I guess during the week I'll figure out car rentals. I've narrowed it down to Hertz and Enterprise, I think.
I love AAA more and more every day. Right now I'm looking up hotel stuff for our trip. I found a hotel for $64 through AAA that isn't the nicest, but isn't a dump either. It has a hot tub though. :) Then I'm looking at hotels.com to compare and look around a little. I end up stumbling on the exact same hotel for $130. It's such a huge difference!

With the discounts on car repairs, glasses, and now vacation stuff, AAA is going to end up paying for itself for the rest of my life. It's insane. Oh, and they are sending me free maps soon. Didn't even have to pay postage. It's just all so cool. :P
Ok, more vacation planning

19th Tuesday: Fly in. Get car. Begin drive to Fresno. Stay at hotel for the night.
20th Wednesday: Day in Fresno. Secret Ninja stuff. Drive back to bay area. Hotel.
21st Thursday: Redwoods. Return car. Hotel.
22nd Friday: Aquarium. Allison's place.
23rd Saturday: TechMuseum. Allison's place.
24th Sunday: Allison's place.
25th Monday: Fly home.

Stuff I need to work out:
- Pets
- Car rental (19th-21st)
- Hotels (Fresno 19th, San Francisco 20 and 21)
California plane tickets have been purchased. Have compared car rental companies. Will reserve cars and hotel stuff once I get final idea of itinerary.

Orlando tickets have also been purchased. I think my mother knows to pick me up from the airport. Then we spend a day in EPCOT with grandpa. (Ellen's Energy Adventure, anyone?) Then fly home very tired.

Still no clue what I'm doing with my dog. May have to skip food for a month to pay kennel fees. (Which makes my heart break just thinking about it.) Or come up with extremely reliable friends very fast.

Also, need an icon for all this stuff.
Ok, I think vacation plans are working out.

19th Tuesday: Fly in. Get car. Begin drive to Fresno. Stay at hotel for the night.
20th Wednesday: Day in Fresno. Secret Ninja stuff. Drive back to bay area. Hotel?
21st Thursday: Car? Low-pressure day. Alcatraz/Chinatown/Stuff. Hotel?
22nd Friday: Car? Aquarium/Redwoods/TechMuseum. Allison's place?
23rd Saturday: Aquarium/Redwoods/TechMuseum. Allison's place?
24th Sunday: Aquarium/Redwoods/TechMuseum. Allison's place?
25th Monday: Fly home.

Other stuff I need to work out:
- Pets
Orlando tickets booked. One less thing to worry about.

Latest snag in our california trip? Someone else in ben's company wants that time off too. So now we need to see what we can do to work around that.

Bah, so busy planning!
Ok, we decided it would probably be smarter to stay in the general bay area and skip disney. Disney is REALLY far away. Plus we're going to disney with my grandpa in october, so really we're not missing much.

Now I just need to decide what stuff I want to do while on vacation. Ben said to make a big list, and we'd go over it later. (When he's not super busy at work, like right now.)

San Francisco:
- Fisherman's Warf (pier 39 sea lions!)
- Lombard Steet (it is the wiggly)
- Alcatraz (the rock) http://www.nps.gov/alcatraz/ http://www.blueandgoldfleet.com/ http://www.buyalcatraztours.com/
- Japantown or Chinatown (not so important to me to see either)
- Golden Gate Brider (eh)
- San Francisco Zoo (baby giraffes!) http://www.sfzoo.org/
- Aquarium of the Bay http://www.aquariumofthebay.com/
- Exploratorium http://www.exploratorium.edu/

San Jose:
- Tech Museum of Innovation (superheros!) http://www.thetech.org/

Other:
- Muir Woods (very old redwoods! trees!!!) http://www.nps.gov/muwo/
Ben and I are planning a trip to California in the future. Many many months from now. But I like to plan things, so I'm already thinking about stuff. I think I may be crazy.

We're going to start in San Francisco. Has anyone been there? Have suggestions on good stuff to see/do? I was thinking of taking a little ferry tour or something, but mostly just being a tourist and shopping/looking/touristing. I think there will also be ben-sister-visiting at this point. I hope she doesn't mind some touristy things.

Then we drive out to look at benitoite and pretty things like that.

Then we drive to Disneyland for fun and excitement and goofy hats with mouse ears on them.

Obviously there will be hotel stays and stuff, because this will be a lot of driving and going to disney after driving 5 or whatever hours would not be fun.
