Thanksgiving was fairly stressful this year. Mainly because I was unable to pre-make anything the day before. I got a terrible migraine on wednesday and spent much of the day in bed. That was time I was supposed to be using to make PIE!!!

So instead I made everything yesterday. It was crazy madness and at one point ben had to come downstairs and calm me. Everything got done though, so yay!

I made stuffed turkey breasts (roulade), mashed potatoes, caramelized carrots, cheddar bay biscuits, chocolate chip cookies, and pumpkin pie (made from a real pumpkin!). We have plenty of leftovers.

After eating, I completely passed out. Not from too much food, but from all that work! And today, I woke up with very sore feet from standing all day. Sadness!

Ben has to work today, which is poopy. I guess I'll spend the day cleaning the kitchen. It looks like a disaster zone.
Thanksgiving was spent all day in bed. I slept nearly the whole day.

Friday was also spent mostly in bed. Ben forced me out to dinner in the evening even though I was loaded up on cold medicine. I had barely eaten that day, so I was surprisingly hungry. Then we walked off dinner in the mall, where the nyquil dizziness made straight lines difficult. At least it wasn't very crowded.

Today I felt much better. I wasn't at 100%, but I was functional again.

Because I lack any sense of moderation, I decided today would be make-up Thanksgiving. I spent the entire day cooking.
Recipe verdicts:
- Wild rice stuffed squash - Ok, but would have been better without the squash. The rice mixture smelled nice and tasted good though. Luckily I have plenty of rice leftovers.
- Quino skillet bread - Still on the fence about this. Taste-wise, it was good. It tasted like cornbread but had a much dense texture that I'm not sure I liked. Plus the center had a weird thick cream portion that freaks me out a little. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone with food texture issues.
- Vegetarian Stuffing - Bland and dry. Hopefully I can come up with creative ways to use this stuff up. Even halving the recipe, I ended up with a ton.
- Baked asparagus with balsamic butter sauce - This one is an old tried and true for me. Double the balsamic vinegar though, or the soy sauce overwhelms the dish. I'm doing my best to leave the leftovers for ben, but I don't think I'm going to be able to hold out.
- Apple galette - Somewhere between a fruit tart and a pie, galettes are awesome because they are so easy and tasty. This was the highlight of the dinner, I think. I did reduce the walnuts slightly, because I am not a huge walnut fan. But ben had two slices after saying he would only have a little bit because he was full. (And later came back for a third.)

I skipped both the salad and the mashed potatoes. I can always make them another night as we work on the leftovers.

After dinner, ben ran out for mead to go with his third slice of apple galette and evening of skyrim. I will probably go to bed soon. I don't want to push myself too hard and get sick again.
I am sick on Thanksgiving. It's pretty miserable. I'm glad I didn't have to go anywhere this year.

We're delaying thanksgiving dinner until I recover. Hopefully I will be better tomorrow.

Ben is out looking for an open store to get me nyquil and chicken soup. I've also been drinking lots of tea with honey which really helps my scratchy throat.

I hate being sick.
Thanksgiving was a success!

I woke up around 8am to finish up all the cooking. Then ben and I started driving around noon. Our stupid gps had us go the scenic route, so it took us longer to get there than it should have. Baltimore can be such a sketchy place. I entertained myself by pointing out how many bail bond, liquor, and pawn shops I could find on each block.

When we got there I made soup and helped carve the turkey with my mighty electric knife.

Then we got to eat! There was tons of tasty food. Everyone ate their fill and then we had to take a break before dessert. We played a bunch of board and card games to pass the time. I was a bit of a jerk to ben about his game. I feel really bad about it and am not sure why I was acting that way. Luckily he forgave me.

Everyone liked the cheesecake despite the crack. And the ice cream went off well too. There were pies there too, but I didn't try any because I am a picky eater and they were not pies I like to eat.

Noname had a good day too. She begged for lots of food and wiggled all over. It must have been a lot of stimulation because she slept the entire way home.

We headed back around 10. I was surprised by the number of people on the road. There wasn't traffic though, so that was good.

Ben and I fell asleep almost instantly after we put everything away. I think if ben's alarm hadn't gone off, I could have slept another 2 or 3 hours. Can you believe he has work today?

I think I will make this a lazy day. I fully intend on not cooking at all. I think I will watch cartoons and knit and cuddle my adorable little dog.
It's been a Murphy's Law kind of day. I'm exhausted.

It started when I discovered that bean paste had gotten itself wedged up into part of my food processor, never got completely washed out, and started to rot. I had to boil the paste soft enough to scrape out, then boil the part again to disinfect it.

Then while baking the cheesecake, I lost track of time and browned the edges slightly. :( It's not as pretty now. I tried to press crumbled graham cracker around the edges, but it didn't help much. And then it developed a HUGE crack as it cooled....

I cut myself once while making the chutney and once while making dinner.

I hope tomorrow goes a bit better.

Checklist )
In the words of Alton Brown, my culinary hero:

When it comes to turkey, Stuffing Is Evil. That's because stuffing goes into the middle of the bird and is extremely porous. That means that as the turkey around it cooks, juices that may contain salmonella bacteria soak into the stuffing, which then must be cooked to a minimum of 165°F in order to be safe. Getting the stuffing to this temperature usually means overcooking the turkey.

The way I see it, cooking stuffing inside a turkey turns the turkey into a rather costly seal-a-meal bag. If you're a stuffing fan, I suggest cooking it separately (in which case it's "dressing," not stuffing) and inserting it into the bird while it rests. Odds are no one will notice the difference.

Anyone going to be in the DC area for Thanksgiving? Any interest in potluck adventures?
Food was achieved today, although not all at the same time. As a result, I filled up on mashed potatoes and corn bread long before the turkey was ready. That's ok though. I'm not much of a turkey fan anyway. Ben says it was delicious and I think my dog agreed. The both of them are now cuddled up together in bed, sleeping off their feast.

I watched march of the penguins while they were falling asleep. It made me want to scoop up all the penguins in the world and put them in zoos where they can be safe and warm forever. Life as a penguin is not fun.

Normally I'm falling asleep about now too. I have no clue why I'm so awake. I disapprove.

Pocket pie plan has been a success. No cooking for me today!

Poorly taken picture of pocket pies )
Five batches of pocket pies, and we didn't even make the pumpkin pie! Soooooo tired. Pictures will come soon. Cranberries still cooking.
Try as you might, you're not going to be able to wipe out the turkey species this way.
I dreamed last night that my old college friends (pre-crazy stuff) and I went to a show in some city. The show was really disappointing. However, my friends met some people at the show who knew the area and were willing to take us to do something more exciting. So we grabbed our stuff and walked out. Outside I realized I had to potty so I told my friends to wait a minute because there was something I had to do inside before we left. When I came back, they were all gone! I called them on their cell phones. They were like, "Oh...yeah...I guess we forgot about you." :( To make things worse, they refused to come back and get me or wait for me to catch up. They wouldn't even give me good directions for where they were going. So there I was, in an unfamiliar city, all alone.

Ben gave me a hug when I woke up and promised to never leave me. He's good to me.

Every time I think I'm getting over all that stupid stuff and actually starting to forget about it, my subconscious throws it back at me again. Stupid brain....

At least the day was better. Played some phoenix wright for a good couple hours because I couldn't fall back asleep. I'm on the third case defending a children's television star accused of murder. He has a really weak alibi (alone in his dressing room taking a nap) so it's a lot harder. And this time the game didn't tell me who did it so I just had to trust that my client was telling the truth when he said he was innocent.

When ben woke up we went food shopping. We bought all the ingredients we need for our thanksgiving pocket pie dinner. We plan on playing wii games all that vacation. Since the wiimote can be played one-handed, all our dishes will be able to be eaten with one hand. And each pie will be based on a traditional thanksgiving dish. Turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberries, mixed veggies, and pumpkin pie.

We also stopped at bestbuy for some wires. There we saw a whole bunch of guys outside waiting for a wii. I'm so glad ben preordered his. I could never survive that cold for one.
I fail at thanksgiving. The noodles for my lasagna weren't soft enough. :( I lose.

Ben still ate it though. He is the best boyfriend ever.

While cooking, I called my mom. She left a nasty message on my phone for not calling her earlier. I thought it would be rude to call during dinner, so I was waiting. Bah. Well, I called her and talked to my entire family. They kept asking me what was new, and there really wasn't anything to tell them. So I told them how my dog's breath stinks like butt. Perfect holiday conversation.

Ben's mommy called today too. I talked to her for a bit. She's much easier to talk to than my mommy. Probably because she doesn't get mad at me.
