I got my flu shot today. I could not think of a logical reason not to get it, even though I really hate needles. My office was offering them for free (if you have the company insurance plan) and they were bringing a nurse into the building to administer them.

I told the nurse I was afraid of needles and was going to keep my eyes shut the whole time and to please not tell me when she's ready. In addition to that, she pressed on my arm so I couldn't feel the initial pressure of the needle. All of that helped me keep my arm muscles decently relaxed, so it didn't hurt too much. Yay!

It hurts a little to lift my arm, but I remember having that problem last year too.

And hopefully this means the filthy people on the metro won't get me sick.
I have decided to give up on push ups. I really hate them. I hate them so much, they were preventing me from doing other exercises. I wasn't even making progress on them. I got stuck at a limit that I couldn't surpass no matter how much I tried.

So I'll stick with sit ups and lots of wii fit and taking my dog on long walks. I managed 51 sit ups last night! Not too long now before I reach 100. And I got a wii fit age of 20. Go me! But I've only lost 2.1 lbs of the gained cruise weight... Still .9 lbs more to go.

In other news, I saw a car driving backwards down a one way street. It was pointed in the right direction, but going in reverse. I wish I could say this was the first time I had seen such a thing. It happens far too frequently in this area.
For the first night in over a week, I did NOT wake up in the middle of the night with stabbing pains! Go me!

In other news, despite being a very plain-looking person, I do not blend in well in a crowd. I do not know why that is.

So close.

Uncle George always says he's going to live to be 100.

He wakes up every morning at sunrise to take a 3 mile walk along the beach. He never eats refined sugars, drinks alcohol, or smokes. He never drives when he can walk. He eats meat sparingly, and when he does he goes to a real butcher to pick the cuts himself and prepare it in the healthiest way possible. Mostly he eats fruits, veggies, and whole grains, and even then he never indulges. He never stays up late. If anyone is going to live to 100, it's going to be him.

Uncle George is 85 and has terminal cancer.
Last night I drank 2000% my daily value of vitamin c.

Now I am attempting 100% omega-3 fatty acids.

Go health!

Or something...
Follow up on that report about veggies preventing your arteries from hardening up.

My mom is insisting that you can't compare mice and humans. (Then why do we test so many things on them?) She continued, "And the truth is in humans is that you need fat protein from meat to keep your arteries elastic."

I learned in school protein repaired and built tissue and helped produce hormones and stuff. I also learned that eating a lot of meat is very very bad for you, especially if you have an inactive lifestyle. People who run, jump, climb trees for a living need more protein than someone who sits on her butt typing at a computer all day. (And no where have I ever seen dietary rules that say the protein has to come from an animal.)

I'm not sure what "fat protein" is. I asked her to offer up some research that proves her right. If she can, I'll listen. If she can't, I will do the happy dance of "I am so much better than you."

Besides, you can get protein from plants. It's incomplete protein, but you can combine it with other plant proteins and get the complete set of amino acids or whatever it is you are trying to collect. Plus eggs and dairy have the proteins you need.

Mom's just crazy. As always.
When I was little my mother was always yelling at me to eat more meat. She said that if I didn't eat lots of meat, my arteries would lose their elasticity and harden up. It never made much sense to me, so I ignored her.

So, do I send her this article?

New research suggests one reason vegetables may be so good for us – a study in mice found that a mixture of five common vegetables reduced hardening of the arteries by 38 percent compared to animals eating a non-vegetable diet.

I think I win. Again.
